How to Upgrade Normal and Special Weapons in Elden Ring

Ring of Elden has many different aspects of character building and customization. One of them is upgrading weapons and ashes of war. While the process isn’t particularly obvious to the player, upgrading armaments makes a Terni’s life more bearable and even more enjoyable.

The main benefit of upgrading weapons is higher damage output. Here we will go over the steps involved in upgrading normal and special weapons in the Ring of Elden upgrade system.

Upgrade Normal Weapons

Many weapons in Ring of Elden are under the normal upgrade progression system and require regular Smithing Stones for reinforcement.

Forging stones

Forging Stones can be found all around the Midlands in a variety of ways, including buying them from vendors, looting them from corpses or chests, and even finding them on the walls of a mine shaft. Ring of Elden provides several opportunities for players to encounter and purchase these upgrade materials.

Normal smithing stones range from Smithing Stone [1] at Smithing Stone [8] and upgrade normal weapons from level zero to level 24. The number of stones required for each level increases in quantity and quality as weapon upgrades increase.

For example:

  • Weapon boost +1 requires two Smithing Stone [1].
  • Weapon boost +2 requires four Smithing Stone [1].
  • +3 Weapon Strengthening requires six Smithing Stone [1].
  • Weapon boost +4 requires two Smithing Stone [2].

This leveling process continues up to the +24 weapon. At this point, an Ancient Dragon Forging Stone is needed to strengthen the weapon to +25. This is the maximum enhancement level for normal weapon types.

Improved special weapons

Special weapons require Dark Forge Stones for reinforcement. These weapons tend to be more powerful than their normal counterparts and can be advanced up to a maximum boost of +10.

Dark Forge Stones

Like Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stones can be found in many different areas of the game. Players can usually find them in treasure chests, on corpses, or even purchase them from NPCs.

Unlike Normal Reinforcement, Special Reinforcement follows a more prototypical upgrade pattern where the quality of the material is equivalent to the quality of the upgrade.

For example:

  • Weapon boost +1 requires Dark Forge Stone [1].
  • +2 Weapon Enhancement Requires Dark Forge Stone [2].

This continues up to the +9 weapon and ends with a Dark Elder Dragon Forging Stone advancing the weapon to a +10 buff.

How to strengthen

Players can go to a few different characters to power up their weapons.

First option: the church of Elleh

Just north of the First Step of Grace site, blacksmithing tools are available to the player to make their own reinforcement. It’s decent early in the game, giving players a way to get their hands on upgraded weapons earlier in their game. Players can boost normal and special weapons here up to +3 before having to seek out a blacksmith.

Option Two: Hewg Forge Master

Once the player enters the round table, they will have access to weapon reinforcements through Smithing Master Hewg. Here players can strengthen their weapons to completion and even apply Ashes of War to normal weapons.

Option 3: Master Blacksmith Iji

Smithing Master Iji is another blacksmith NPC who can upgrade the player’s weapons. It’s on the northwest side of Liurnia of the Lakes, just past the ruins of Kingsrealm, next to the road leading to the site of Grace’s Mansion.

Here players can strengthen their weapons until the end and buy Dark Forge Stones [1] by [4]. Master Iji offers unlimited Dark Forge Stones [1] and [2] and a limited number of Dark Smithing Stones [3] and [4].
